Week 2- Minutes

Week 2- 25m2 Unit and Exemplar presentation

- Initially we did tutorial exercise 2, drawing and marking out floor plans for a 25m2 apartment for two. This was critiqued. We spent to long on organising ourselves , not long enough on design and as a result, the final product was not great. we didn't have the time needed to consider sustainability aspects such as how we would produce energy. I think that the design was also not right as it didn't fully utilise natural lighting and passive ventilation was also not maximised. All in all a bit of a flop.

- After the initial exercise we presented the exemplars that we had found. During the week, we had a group meeting and collaborated all the information we had found on our individual exemplars into a comparable table. This was featured in each of our exemplars on the first A4 page.

The feedback we got from this initial presentation was that we were on the right track and that our method of comparison was good.
- The tutors were interested in my exemplars, and Liked the fact that I had chosen exemplars that were relevant to the final assignment.

My exemplars were :

a T.O.D in the Netherlands- which incorporated social housing

and A design comp in Korea that highlighted an interesting model for an ageing population; how multiple generations could live together autonomously in the one dwelling. A system of housing blocks separated by green space and laid out so as not to interrupt views from all dwellings.

We plan to have another meeting on monday to discuss our next exemplars. As Grant and Myself were the only members to present this week, next week the other two members will present.

The exemplars I have for next week are :
Pindari- An australian exemplar. awarded an AIA award in 2010.
and no. 1 Centaur st, an apartment building situated 30 cm distance from a part of the waterloo railway station in London.

- Initially we formed groups for assignment 1.
group members and emails:
Marike- sunsky17@hotmail.com
Maddy- madeline.hardy@connect.qut.edu.au
Grant- grant.chapman@connect.qut.edu.au

we then begun to examine the First assignment.

- breaking down the CRA- A Quarter of the mark will go to presentation, decided to eventually design a template that all portfolio exemplars will follow. - roughly looked at Info that will be important.

- decided that we would have another group meeting monday at 1pm. by this stage we will all have a few example to discuss and we can stat to organise into some sort of structure/ template.

- whole group unsure about terminology difference type of urban housing then doing and typological approach and so sort explanation from both Tutors.

- Typology brainstorm , came up with the idea to look at public housing as a type of urban housing v's other possible typologies in order to help with final design research.

- important info to find:
# of units, climate, architect/ date completed, philosophy, density requirements? , connectivity, layout of interior space, ecological footprint, plot ratio, type of space, internal environment, internal functional zone relationship. public space utilisation, proximity to transport, sustainability.

- Luke sugests we do some internal investigation into dimensions and scale:

- We then did the class exercise of doing sketches of some of the multi residential examples we had seen.

- for next meeting on monday - we will each have examples and have chosen roughly 3 to discuss in detail
- for class next week we will have at least 2 examples critiqued to pin up and todays class exercise to show.
